On Tuesday, February 25th, the U.S. government announced a new policy requiring aliens, including minors, to register with federal authorities. This policy applies to individuals aged 14 and older who have not previously registered.
Aliens will be required to apply for registration and provide fingerprints. Children under 14 must also be registered, with parents and guardians responsible for ensuring compliance. Aliens who were previously registered must re-register and submit fingerprints once they turn 14.
“Once an alien has registered and appeared for fingerprinting (unless waived), DHS will issue evidence of registration, which aliens over the age of 18 must carry and keep in their possession at all times,” the USCIS statement confirmed. “No alien will have an excuse for failure to comply with this law.”
The Trump administration now prioritizes enforcement as part of its immigration and national security priorities. Failure to comply could result in civil and criminal penalties.
“Illegal aliens must register with the federal government. This has been the law of the land for decades & we will enforce it,” stated DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “If they register and leave now, they may have the opportunity to return and live the American dream. If they don’t, they will face the consequences.”
While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not yet provided full details on the registration process, aliens are encouraged to create a USCIS online account to prepare. Further instructions will be provided soon.
