New York City schools are opening on Thursday, September 8th. This is the first full school year under Chancellor David Banks and Mayor Eric Adams. Parents are counting on them to properly educate their children and keep them safe in school. No child can learn in an unsafe environment.
Chancellor Banks has made changes to the leadership of school districts, schools, and central staff as part of his focus to educate students and ensure they have the social and emotional support they need to be successful in their studies. New superintendents and principals are on a mission to turn around their schools and their districts. The days of the “soft bigotry of low expectations” of our students are over.
We have two successful Black men, our Chancellor and our Mayor, both graduates of the New York City public school system, in charge of educating our children. This is no easy task. They inherited a system where 65% of Black and Hispanic students do not read, write, or do math at grade level compounded with COVID-19 learning loss. Good luck gentlemen!
