Whose Child is Next?
A 15-year-old, straight-A student, was shot in the chest and killed on the subway on Friday, October 14th, as he was traveling home from school. His parents sent him to school expecting their son to return home safely to them. They are now living every parent’s worst nightmare.
Jayjon Burnett could have been my son, your son, your nephew, or your grandson.
No child is safe in New York City. Every mother I speak to whose child is a victim of gun violence tells me they never imagined it would happen to their child.
No one is immune from being a victim of gun violence, stabbings, assaults, and crime.
I grew up in Bed-Stuy in the 80’s. The violence I am seeing today terrifies me as a mother. It was never as bad as it is now. Parents are losing their children to gun violence. Parents do not know if their children will return home safely from school.
It is not safe for your child to go to the bodega, park, subway, or street lest a bullet finds them. Mothers are being assaulted and stabbed in the subways and in the streets. This is not normal. The streets are overflowing with the blood of children. How many more children must die before they fix the bail reform and raise the age laws? Whose child is next?
