New Class of School Safety Agents Graduates
A new class of School Safety Agents graduated on Tuesday, August 30th. School Safety Agents are civil servants and take a civil service exam. The agents, the majority of which are women of color, underwent 17 weeks of training at the police academy. They will be assigned to schools throughout the city.
In preparation for the new school year, the NYPD also conducted active shooter training for all School Safety Agents, principals, assistant principals, and other school administrators.
The class of School Safety Agents that graduated on August 30th consisted of 193 men and women. A new class of 200 School Safety Agents began training on August 31st.
School Safety Agents are understaffed. According to Greg Floyd, president of Teamsters – Local 237 which represents School Safety Agents, there is a shortage of 2,000 School Safety Agents that must be hired to adequately protect our children in school.
