Far too many young children and teens are becoming victims of rampant gun violence in our communities. Walking down the street, going to the bodega, and playing in the park could get our children shot and killed in New York City.
In the last month, teenagers from out of state visiting family in the Bronx and Manhattan were shot. One of them, a 14-year-old boy from Plainfield, NJ who was visiting his grandparents, was fatally shot with a bullet in his head. Two teen girls visiting New York City from Virginia were both shot in the Bronx but fortunately, their injuries were non-life threatening.
Mayor Adams, Police Commissioner Sewell, and the NYPD are working hard to get guns off our streets. Unfortunately, the criminals they arrest are released the same day because of the bail reform laws.
Mayor Adams has asked Governor Hochul and state legislative leaders to convene a special session to change the law and protect New Yorkers. They said no. In New York State, the criminals are protected and the victims suffer.
