Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks have inherited a mess from the de Blasio administration. New York City schools are facing a budget crisis due to under-enrollment. Parents are fleeing the public school system by enrolling their children in charter and parochial schools.
NYC is the largest school district in the nation and in the world. Our school system used to educate over 1 million students a few years ago, but now we are projected to only have 760,439 by the end of the 2022/2023 school year.
Today, the school system is experiencing massive hemorrhaging due to under-enrollment. Parents are fed up with their children not being educated. With 65% of Black and Hispanic students not reading, writing, or doing math at grade level, wouldn’t you transfer your child out of the failing school system?
School budgets are slashed because the students have left. These are the facts. Schools are not being defunded as those responsible for the mess are alleging. Nor are teachers losing their jobs. Instead of spreading lies to incite panic, teachers and their union need to take responsibility for their failure and work with Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks to improve the educational outcomes of the students.
