Recent Polls Show Zeldin Closing Gap on Hochul
The midterm elections keep drawing closer and now only three weeks stand between the various candidates and occupying their desired offices. Polls had shown Governor of New York Kathy Hochul with a credible lead over her rival for the governorship of the state, Lee Zeldin. However, two new polls published on Tuesday, October 18th have shown that Zeldin seems to have swayed people with his campaigns. Recent Quinnipiac University and Siena polls show that Zeldin has begun to close the gap with Hochul.
The Quinnipiac poll shows a 4-point gap between the rivals with Hochul sitting at 50% and Zeldin at 46%. It further shows that Hochul holds favor in the city where she has a 59% rate of approval while Zeldin sits at 37%.
With regards to voters not registered to a political party, Zeldin shows more positive projections with 57% while Hochul is at 37%.
Zeldin’s campaign has focused on anti-crime and inflation. Quinnipiac’s poll found that 28% and 20% of poll participants saw crime and inflation as New York’s more urgent problems. Hochul focused more on campaigning for abortion and criticizing Zeldin for voting against the certification of the 2020 presidential election. 14% of poll participants were in favor of protecting democracy while 6% highlighted abortion as an important issue.
Still on the News…
The Siena poll produced slightly different results. According to that poll, the gap between the two candidates is 11 points with Hochul leading 52-41%. According to the Gothamist, this shows a slight decline for Hochul who led by 17 points in a poll carried out three weeks ago.
However, Siena’s recent poll showed that Hochul seemingly has support in the city’s electorate, holding a 70-23% advantage. Zeldin has more support in Long Island and the rest of the state, scoring 49-45% and 48-44% respectively.
These recent polls show contrasting prospects for the candidates vying to be elected governor. A Survey USA poll further shows how Zeldin has closed the gap on Hochul. When Survey USA carried out a poll two months ago, Hochul held a 24-point advantage over Zeldin.
In a poll published on October 19th, the governor is ahead of her rival by 6 points. The poll shows that Zeldin carries favor with male voters leading by 13 points. Hochul has the women’s vote, leading by 25 points. Zeldin has a 6-point advantage when it comes to white voters, while Hochul has a 41, 42, and 15-point advantage when it comes to Black, Asian, people of other descent, and Latinos respectively.
Hochul is looking to be the first woman elected as governor in New York while Zeldin seeks to be the first Republican to hold the office since 2006.
