Serena Williams Announces Imminent Retirement
On Tuesday, August 9th, Serena Williams announced that she would likely retire from the game of tennis after the forthcoming US Open. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, made the announcement in an essay published in Vogue magazine as well as on an Instagram post.
Williams wrote how she dislikes the word retirement and is instead evolving away from the game. “I have never liked the word retirement,” she wrote. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.”
Williams, who is 40 years old and has been playing tennis professionally for 27 years, has expressed a desire to explore some of the aspects of her life she loves outside tennis. This includes her family and business ventures.
She has expressed her love for the game of tennis and how painful the thought of retiring is but she also felt as though she couldn’t juggle taking care of her family and staying fully committed to her beloved sport.
“There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction,” Williams said in a post on Instagram.
“That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness, do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals, and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”
Serena Williams will go down in history as a serial winner. Williams has 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, numerous doubles titles, and four Olympic gold medals. She has amassed winnings close to $100 million and spent 319 weeks as the highest-ranked female tennis player.
Still on the News…
She has been so successful in the sport that very few if any players in her era come close. She has done more than enough to be hailed one of the best athletes ever. An argument can be made that she is the greatest tennis player of all time.
Not only did Williams dominate the sport but she came with a new style of play that combined aggression, power, speed, and skill. When Serena and her sister Venus began playing tennis, it was a sport widely watched and played by white audiences and white players. The Williams sisters changed that, bringing much-needed diversity to the sport in terms of players and fans.
Williams is a role model to several up-and-coming successful black tennis players. “I grew up watching her. I mean that’s the reason why I play tennis,” Coco Gauff said. “Tennis, being a predominantly white sport, it definitely helped a lot. Because I saw somebody who looked like me dominating the game. It made me believe that I could dominate too.”
Williams has lost the four Grand Slam finals she has reached. She won her last title at the Australian Open in 2017, while she was two months pregnant with her daughter, Alexis Olympia, which is a testament to her resilience. Williams still has a chance to match that 24-title record but regardless of the outcome of the game, she will be forever etched in the annals of the game.
